Hey Christine,

It may be easy to create curb appeal if someone lives in a climate without “old man winter”. What tips do you have for people who need to sell during winter months when snow is likely to be several feet deep?

– Bill K., Edina, Minnesota

Bill, Great question!

Curb appeal is like the wrapping on a present. Great curb appeal can add up to 28 percent onto the value of property; however, you are correct in that it is a little more difficult in winter. It is definitely important to clear the driveway, paths, and decks, and add salt to ensure no slips happen. Also, make sure the front porch and garden are well lit. This is easy to do with LED lighting that uses 90 percent less energy than traditional lights. I would encourage the seller to add tasteful white lights to trees and bushes to create a slow-down capture moment at the drive by. Add green boughs, red sticks, and shiny ornaments in planters (remember the rule – 2/3 foliage to size of planter), and a fabulous winter-inspired welcome mat. An attractive bird feeder with a fresh balsam swag tied to an old sled might encourage house hunters to picture themselves at your listing next year around the holidays.
