Hello Christine,
I have a serious question that I hope you will answer for me. I understand the real estate and staging industries are both changing. As a Realtor, my concern is that as the staging industry grows, more and more unqualified people think they have the skills to be involved in this field. How will the consumer ascertain how “good” is good and how “good” is necessary? I mean, how far does someone have to go to have their house ready for market? Isn’t it getting out of hand?

Wow, Vanessa – some great questions here.

You have raised some legitimate concerns, too. As President of CSP International I completely understand how you feel, as I have felt that way at times. To help, we have introduced continuing education and designations for the staging community, which mirror the disciplines of real estate. We also offer a Master’s certification that is attained through work in the field and accumulation of continuing education; it stands as a mark of excellence and achievement in the marketplace. We have a strict code of conduct that a graduate signs. It includes things like always discussing pricing with the client before the job, and not taking on work for which they are not qualified. In the training sessions we discuss ways to ascertain “window of value;” in other words, exactly how far you go with recommendations. In addition, you need to know a CSP in good standing always has the opportunity to come back to class free of charge to make sure even their basic knowledge is current. For example, they can get a refresher course on decor trends and how they relate back to staging in the current market. I hope this helps. Please feel free to contact me for more details.
