Joanne ODonnell has been training professional stagers and realtors in the business and techniques of home staging since 2002. She is very excited about being affiliated with the highly acclaimed Certified Staging Professional Course. Joanne has been named the Director of Training and has taken on managing the Mentor/Apprentice program for the entire CSP program. Previously Joanne taught the Accredited Staging Professional course in California and Nevada for over three years. She trained both Real Estate Agents and professional Home Stagers in all aspects of Home Staging. She was a charter member of the International Association of Home Staging Professionals and is a well respected leader in the Staging industry.
Joanne has been professionally staging quality homes in the San Francisco Bay Area since early 2002. She is now sharing the knowledge she gained building her company, Chic Home Interiors, with her Certified Staging Professionals candidates. She also brings to her training all of her experiences during 25 years of solid business and corporate training experience as a Human Resource Manager and Executive Recruiter.
Joanne's professional training includes: Certified Staging Professional course, Dewey Color Instructor course, House Doctor Property Presentation seminar, One Day Staging Professional course, Accredited Staging Professional Master program and Train the Trainer course, and the Certified Home Marketing Specialist course. Joanne attended the University of Illinois for both her undergraduate and graduate studies.

A color consultation for the new home can be a great client gift at the close of escrow. I have been working on a Color Consultation this week with a new homeowner client. We are using the Dewey Color System to create a personalized room by room color palette throughout the house.
In a couple of the rooms we took our inspiration from an existing piece. In others, we started from scratch with no preconceived notions. The Dewey Color System is designed to ensure the finished product speaks to the individual client, ensuring that each room in their home brings them the feeling they are looking for in each room. It does this by starting with the patented Dewey Color System Test and using the patented Dewey Color Coordinator. The finished product is a home that is uniquely designed for the particular client with no fear of color mismatches.
Color choices are one of the first reasons new clients hire designers. They are intimidated by the overwhelming breadth of choices. They don’t want to make a color mistake, especially on the walls. Even though paint is one of the easiest and most affordable changes to make, the sheer massiveness of walls in comparison to the smaller color choices (a chair, linens, or accessories) creates fear in the hearts of the average consumer. That is why, for many, the first time they reach for the phone to call a designer, it is for a color consultation.
Many designers, including home stagers, have expanded their business to include color consults for these homeowners. As stagers, we know just what colors and color combos will sell a house, we know how to buy for our inventory and what colors to recommend to freshen and enhance the interior and exterior of the homes we stage. We also know what works for us, makes us happy in our own environment. But with the way color effects different people so differently, how do we ensure that our recommendations will create an environment that really takes into account the client and their color sensibilities?
The people at We Make Color Easy have developed a certification program based on the Dewey Color System that does just that. The Dewey Color System, the world’s first scientifically validated color test, has been compared favorably in scientific journals to the Strong Interest Inventory and other psychological testing instruments. This Walnut Creek property
already had fabulous built-ins, beautiful hardwood floors, a Staging

We showcased the property by
adding a rug and accessories to anchor the table and chairs and bring
the color scheme together.

Simply angling the existing dining set, de-cluttering, adding art and
accessories, and upgrading the dated light fixture were all that was
needed to change this Walnut Creek dining room from drab to fab!
To draw buyers’ attention to
the spectacular backyard (more on this
in the Curb Appeal section) we added a relaxing chaise lounge seating
area that draws the eye out.

This formal dining room in the
Blackhawk section of Danville had not ever really been fully furnished
by the owners.
We brought in a beautiful
dining set to support the asking price of this fabulous home in one of
the most sought after locations in the San Francisco Bay
Area. Furniture, art and accessory placement, along with
removal of the outdoor tent draws buyers’ eyes outdoors to the fabulous
view and the possibility for gracious indoor and outdoor living in this
magnificent property.

This adorable small cottager in
Oakland, CA needed a complete facelift and got
it.. 
The homeowner gave
it a complete face lift as part of the staging process, with
luxurious suede paint effect and beautiful hardwood floors.
To showcase this beautiful
setting and create that buyer excitement we added simple but elegant
furnishings, using a round glass table to keep the feeling of
spaciousness, and large, serene art to add to that impact, plus a
beautiful mirror to reflect and duplicate the effect.

This open concept Montclair
home in the hills area of Oakland, CA needed de-cluttering of course.
But more than that we needed
to, and did, create a dramatic, elegant dining area that buyers in this
upscale community are looking for – even in smaller properties. The
addition of a luscious live palm, furnishings that support the sale
price of the home and elegant accessories did the trick.

This Lafayette,
CA dining room
area was cut off by heavy living room furniture disrupting the flow.
By changing the living room
furniture to two seating areas with the larger furniture enhancing the
fireplace (the new living room area that was featured in Home Staging
for Dummies will be featured in Part 6 of this series) we were able to
open up this dining area and give it the attention and contemporary
elegance buyers are seeking.

A professional stager knows the importance of bedrooms in the sale price of a home. This time we engage young boys and their parents with a fun boy’s room.
