Staging Your Home For Entertaining

I was asked if I had any quick tips on staging the home for entertaining over the holidays. Here’s my answer.
With your furnishings, avoid an over-crowded look, but still have lots of guest seating by moving out some bulky pieces and substituting smaller, more versatile chairs or stools.
Pack away the cute and kitschy. Go for simple, elegant decorations such as shiny ball ornaments in one or two colours. Use non-flashing white lights. Keep the colour scheme consistent throughout the house and avoid creating clashes with existing elements in your decor.
This year I used lots of small white lights on my tree, and put on gold beads and a couple of sets of gold ornaments with a gold topper. When I stepped back and liked what I saw, I quit right there.
If guests with different beliefs are expected, you may want to keep your theme secular. You can’t go wrong with greenery and seasonal plants. Wreaths, garlands on the mantle, and small branches on the window sills look and smell great.
This plan will give you a classy look, suitable even if your home is on the market. If you are not selling, and have a more ‘eclectic’ set of ornaments which have special meaning for your family, consider using those on a second tree in the family room.
Happy Holidays Everyone, Martha
